Police in Nakawa Division have successfully foiled an armed robbery in Ssemwogerere Zone, Kampala District, during a night patrol operation that ended with one suspect being put out of action and a rifle recovered at the scene.

The incident happened on 23rd June 2026 at about 0050 hours along Mukasa Road. According to preliminary reports, a businessman and his wife were walking home when they were suddenly intercepted by three armed men. The suspects ordered the couple to stop and lie down, and the victims complied out of fear for their lives.

The armed men then robbed the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint. They later turned their attention to the woman, demanding for her phone as well. However, before they could complete the robbery, police officers who were on motorcycle patrol in the area quickly arrived at the scene.

On noticing the approaching police, the suspects attempted to flee the area. In the process, they abandoned a bag that contained suspected stolen items together with a rifle. Police officers immediately gave chase, leading to a brief pursuit.

During the operation, one of the suspects, an unidentified male believed to be about 25 years old, was fatally injured and put out of action. The remaining suspects managed to escape and are currently being pursued by security forces.

Police recovered several items from the scene, including one SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to have been stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.

The body of the deceased suspect was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Authorities praised the officers involved for their quick response, saying their action prevented what could have been a more violent crime and ensured the safety of the victims. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing as police hunt for the remaining suspects.
