“Where Is Ninye Tabz?” Uganda Law Society Demands Answers Over Alleged Abduction

Must read

The President of the Uganda Law Society, Isaac K. Ssemakadde, has demanded immediate answers from authorities following reports that photojournalist and activist Andrew Natumanya, popularly known as Ninye Tabz, was allegedly abducted and detained in Kamwokya.

In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, the Uganda Law Society described the reported disappearance as deeply disturbing and called on security agencies to clarify Tabz’s whereabouts. The society questioned under what legal authority he was allegedly taken, whether he faces any charges, and why he has not been produced before a court of law.

Ssemakadde noted that Tabz has played a visible role in documenting political events in Uganda, particularly within circles associated with the National Unity Platform (NUP). He argued that any detention outside the established legal process would be unacceptable and urged authorities to either present him before court or release him without delay.

In a notable part of his statement, Ssemakadde revealed that he and Tabz had not always been on good terms. He said the activist had previously criticized him during periods of persecution and exile and had also allegedly targeted other public figures online. Despite those differences, Ssemakadde emphasized that the protection of fundamental rights should not depend on personal relationships or political affiliations.

“As Head of the Bar, my responsibility transcends individual animosities and political loyalties,” Ssemakadde stated, adding that the same state machinery that has been accused of targeting critics in the past could be used against anyone if legal safeguards are ignored.

The Uganda Law Society pledged to provide any necessary legal support and advocacy to ensure that Tabz’s rights are protected. Ssemakadde also urged political activists, supporters, and members of the public to recognize that respect for human rights and the rule of law must extend to all citizens, including those with whom they may disagree.

Addressing Tabz’s family, the law society president said no Ugandan should “vanish into the shadows of state power,” and strongly condemned what he described as a cowardly act. He called for the journalist’s immediate production, fair treatment, and full respect for his constitutional rights.

The statement adds to growing public concern surrounding reports of disappearances and detentions of political activists and government critics. As of the time of the statement, authorities had not publicly responded to the allegations, while the Uganda Law Society maintained its demand for transparency and accountability in the matter.
