As Uganda prepares for the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect Yoweri Museveni tomorrow, the Electoral Commission has explained the important constitutional role it will play during the historic national event. The Commission says its duty is to officially present to Ugandans the person they duly elected during the January 15, 2026 General Elections.
According to a statement issued by Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi on May 11, the process will follow Article 61(2) of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda. The statement explained that during the ceremony, the Director of Ceremonies will invite the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, together with other Commissioners, to the main podium.
Justice Byabakama is expected to make brief remarks before officially inviting the President-Elect to the podium. This moment is considered one of the most important stages of the inauguration ceremony because it symbolizes the Electoral Commission formally presenting to the nation the leader chosen by Ugandans through the ballot.
After presenting the President-Elect, the EC Chairperson will then invite the Chief Justice, accompanied by the Chief Registrar and the Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet, to take their positions on the podium. The Chief Justice will then proceed with administering the presidential oaths, officially marking the beginning of the new presidential term.
The explanation from the Electoral Commission has helped many Ugandans understand the constitutional procedures followed during the inauguration of a President. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to attract thousands of invited guests, including government officials, religious and cultural leaders, diplomats, and citizens from different parts of the country.
Security and preparations for the ceremony have already been finalized as Uganda prepares for one of the country’s most significant national events. Many people are expected to follow the ceremony live on television, radio, and online platforms as the country witnesses another constitutional transition of leadership.
