The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially opened expressions of interest for party members seeking to contest as the party flag bearer in the upcoming Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
In a notice issued on May 11, 2026, the party’s Election Management Committee (EMC) announced that interested and qualified members are now free to apply for consideration ahead of the anticipated parliamentary race. The announcement marks the beginning of NUP’s internal preparations as political activity starts building up around the island district.
According to the statement signed by EMC Chairperson Harriet Chemutai, all aspiring candidates will be required to physically submit their applications at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Kampala. The exercise is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
The party also directed applicants to attach several important documents, including copies of their National Unity Platform membership card, National Identification Card, Curriculum Vitae, and certified academic qualification documents.
NUP leaders say the exercise is aimed at identifying a strong and suitable candidate capable of carrying the party flag in what is expected to become a highly competitive by-election. The party emphasized that only committed and eligible members should participate in the process.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election is already attracting political attention from different parties, with many expected to intensify mobilization efforts in the coming weeks. Political observers believe the contest could become an important test of strength among opposition and ruling party structures in the district.
Kalangala District, which is made up of islands on Lake Victoria, has in recent years become increasingly significant in Uganda’s political landscape. Major political parties have continued investing heavily in the area as they seek to expand their influence and strengthen representation in Parliament.
With NUP now officially opening the race for interested aspirants, attention is expected to shift to potential candidates who may emerge to battle for the party ticket ahead of the by-election campaigns.
