Police is investigating a fire that gutted part of a school dormitory at Kaka Memorial Primary School in Kaka Zone, Kiganda Town Council, Kassanda District. The incident happened on the evening of 2nd July 2026 at around 18:50 hours, leaving pupils and staff in shock.
According to reports, the fire quickly spread through the dormitory and threatened to destroy pupils’ property and other school belongings. The situation was brought under control through a combined effort of police and local residents who responded immediately after the alarm was raised.

The Officer in Charge of Kiganda Police Station mobilized officers who rushed to the scene to assist the community already fighting the flames. Residents used buckets of water, jerrycans, saucepans, and sand to try and contain the fire before it could spread further to other school structures.
Their quick and coordinated response helped to fully contain the fire, preventing what could have been a much more serious disaster. Authorities confirmed that no deaths or injuries were reported, bringing relief to parents and the school administration.
However, some pupils’ belongings, including scholastic materials and clothing, were destroyed in the fire. The extent of the damage is still being assessed by relevant authorities.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire and determine whether it was accidental or resulted from other circumstances. Officials say a full report will be released once inquiries are complete.
Wamala Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SSP L. Kigozi, praised the residents of Kiganda for their swift and courageous response. He noted that their action played a key role in minimizing losses.
He also urged the public to always respond quickly in such emergencies instead of waiting for police, which may sometimes be delayed due to distance and logistical challenges.
The school community remains concerned but grateful that no lives were lost as investigations into the incident continue.
