Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested six officers attached to the 999 KMP South following allegations that they abandoned injured road crash victims and instead left the scene with one of the vehicles involved in the accident.
The incident happened on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at about 9:45am at Soya Bunga along the Kampala-Ggaba Road. The crash involved a white Tata motor vehicle, registration number UBH 480U, and an unidentified motorcycle.
According to an incident report from Kabalagala Police Division, police vehicle UP 00242 arrived at the scene about two minutes after the crash. The vehicle was under the command of No. 48814 Sergeant Chekwech Wycliffe and had six crew members.
However, instead of immediately helping the seriously injured victims or securing the vehicles involved in the crash, the officers allegedly started negotiating with the driver of the Tata vehicle.
The report states that after several minutes, the officers left the scene with the Tata vehicle, claiming they were escorting it to Ggaba Police Station. The injured victims were reportedly left behind.
By the time traffic officers arrived, Good Samaritans had already rushed the victims to hospital. The Tata vehicle and the motorcycle involved in the crash were also nowhere to be seen.
The report further alleges that the officers travelled with the Tata vehicle towards Ggaba Police Station but later got out near the station and allowed the vehicle to continue without taking further action. They then reportedly returned to their police vehicle and proceeded towards Ggaba Trading Centre.
The two victims were later traced to International Hospital Kampala (IHK), where they were found with fractured legs and were awaiting surgery. They were identified as Feven Kahsey Takle, 22, and Delina Negesi Gerense, 18, both residents of Soya Bunga.
Following a review of CCTV footage and the officers’ conduct, authorities ordered the immediate arrest of all six crew members.
Sergeant Chekwech Wycliffe and Corporal Oding Charles were placed on PF 94, while three police constables and a PPC were placed on PF 18. They were also instructed to help trace the Tata vehicle and the motorcycle involved in the crash.
Police also visited the crash scene and the two victims at IHK, where PF3 medical forms were issued. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
The case has raised concerns about the conduct of police officers responding to road crashes, particularly their responsibility to assist injured victims and secure vehicles involved in accidents.
