Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said President Yoweri Museveni instructed him to stop any plans to prosecute Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, saying his father had decided to forgive her despite mistakes she may have made.
In a post on X, Muhoozi said: “No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her.” The statement appeared to suggest that Museveni had personally intervened in the matter and directed that Among be released from what Muhoozi described as house arrest.
Muhoozi, who is the Chief of Defence Forces, said the decision was based on forgiveness rather than prosecution. His remarks have attracted attention because they touch on the political future of Among, one of Uganda’s most senior political leaders.
The statement also raises questions about the circumstances surrounding Among’s reported house arrest and what led to the decision to release her. Muhoozi did not give details of the alleged mistakes, the nature of the restrictions placed on the Speaker, or when exactly she would be fully free.
By saying that “Mzee” had chosen to forgive Among, Muhoozi appeared to indicate that the matter had been settled at the highest level. He also made it clear that there would be no prosecution against her over the issues referred to in his post.
Among has remained a powerful figure in Uganda’s political leadership, serving as Speaker of Parliament. Any development involving her is therefore likely to attract significant public and political interest.
Muhoozi’s latest statement is expected to fuel further debate about the allegations surrounding Among, the reported house arrest and the role of President Museveni in the decision to end the matter without prosecution.
