Until Further Notice!! NUP Events Suspended as Police Cite Traffic Disruptions and Safety Risks

Must read

The Uganda Police Force has ordered a suspension of planned regional mobilization training sessions organized by the National Unity Platform (NUP), citing public safety concerns and repeated violations of traffic regulations by party supporters.

In an official letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to NUP Secretary General Mr. David Lewis, the office of the Inspector General of Police referenced earlier communications warning the party against breaching guidelines during political activities. The police particularly referenced incidents from May 2024 and July 2024, where similar concerns were raised.

The latest police action stems from a political event held in Mbale on April 14, 2025, where, according to the authorities, NUP supporters returning from the gathering “disregarded all traffic laws” and completely blocked traffic at Iganga Town. The Inspector General’s office noted that such actions not only violate the law but also endanger the lives of innocent road users.

“Mobilization must not endanger people’s lives,” reads part of the letter signed by Okoshi Simon Peter on behalf of the Inspector General of Police.

As a result, upcoming NUP mobilization training meetings scheduled for April 17 at Ankole Resort Bushenyi and April 24 at Palm Garden Restaurant and Guest House in Gulu have been suspended until further notice.

The communication further informs regional police commanders in Greater Bushenyi and Aswa West to take note and act accordingly.

This development raises questions about the growing tensions between opposition political activity and public order enforcement in Uganda. While the NUP has yet to publicly respond to the suspension, observers are closely watching how the party will navigate the increasingly scrutinized political space.
