The Commander of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Charles Okidi, has called on newly graduated officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to lead with integrity, professionalism, and discipline. He made these remarks during a colorful graduation ceremony at the Air Command and Leadership Training Centre in Nakasongola.
A total of 54 officers successfully completed the Squadron Officers Course, a major step in strengthening leadership within the UPDF Air Force. Representing the Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Okidi praised the graduates for their hard work and encouraged them to maintain high moral standards. “Integrity is not just a word,” he said. “It defines the kind of leaders we expect you to be.”
Lt Gen Okidi emphasized that the graduation marked great progress in the UPDF’s journey towards becoming one of the most professional and reliable air forces on the African continent. He noted that the training these officers received reflects the growing strength and potential of the UPDF Air Force. “You must serve with pride and honour, and let your careers be defined by courage, excellence, and the UPDF spirit,” he added.
He warned the officers against corruption and fraud, reminding them that such actions damage the image of the entire institution. Instead, he urged them to be role models and to set good examples for others to follow.
The Commander also applauded Brigadier General James Muhwezi, the Commandant of the college, and his team of instructors. He thanked them for their commitment to shaping responsible and capable leaders. “Your efforts have built a learning environment based on discipline, teamwork, and service,” he said.
Brig Gen Muhwezi shared that the course was designed to improve leadership and command skills, in line with the UPDF’s goal of becoming more professional. He congratulated the officers and encouraged them to apply the knowledge and skills they had gained in their future duties.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking UPDF officers, including Maj Gen David Isimbwa, Brig Gen David Gonyi, Brig Gen Richard Rubongoya, Brig Gen Saad Katemba, and Brig Gen Justus Rukundo. Also present were Mrs Harriet Kyomuhangi from the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, along with representatives from other security agencies.
The graduation not only celebrated the achievements of the officers but also marked a new chapter in the UPDF’s commitment to building a force of integrity and excellence
