Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, has called on young people to play a crucial role in promoting peaceful electoral processes ahead of the 2026 General Elections. Speaking at a dialogue event in Kampala, Justice Byabakama emphasized the importance of youth participation in fostering a peaceful and credible electoral environment.

The event, which took place at the @StatisticsUg House, was organized by the youth chapter of the International Community of Banyakigezi (ICOB). It brought together young leaders, activists, and community members to discuss their role in ensuring that the upcoming elections are peaceful, transparent, and free from violence or manipulation.

Justice Byabakama highlighted that the youth are not just the future but also the present, with the power to shape the direction of Uganda’s democracy. He urged them to actively engage in the electoral process, not only as voters but also as advocates for fairness and accountability. “Youth have a responsibility to not only participate in elections but also to act as peace ambassadors during the campaign period and polling day,” he said.

The EC Chairperson also emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the lead-up to the elections. He warned that any form of electoral violence or disruption could undermine the democratic process and negatively affect the country’s stability. “Peaceful elections are the foundation of our democracy. We need to ensure that our elections are conducted in an environment of mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperation,” Justice Byabakama added.

The dialogue served as an opportunity to educate and mobilize youth about their role in election monitoring, voter education, and advocating for peaceful campaigns. Participants were encouraged to promote inclusivity and to reject any form of violence or hate speech that could fuel tensions during the election period.

The ICOB youth chapter, which organized the event, is known for its advocacy work in promoting civic education and peaceful political engagement among young Ugandans. The organization aims to equip young people with the knowledge and tools necessary to actively participate in shaping the country’s political landscape.

As Uganda heads toward the 2026 General Elections, it is clear that youth involvement will be a critical factor in ensuring a smooth, peaceful, and democratic process. The collaboration between the Electoral Commission and organizations like ICOB demonstrates a growing commitment to engaging young people in the political process and empowering them to take responsibility for their country’s future.
