The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is the main government body that oversees communication services in Uganda. Without UCC, there would be less order and control in how these services operate.

The Commission is also in charge of licensing. Any company that wants to provide communication services in Uganda must first get permission from UCC. This includes telecom companies, radio stations, TV stations, internet service providers, and postal service operators. Through licensing, UCC controls who enters the market and ensures that service providers follow the laws and guidelines of the country.
Another key role of UCC is economic regulation. This involves making sure there is fair competition among communication service providers. UCC works to prevent monopoly and unfair pricing, which helps protect consumers from being overcharged. It also encourages investment in the communication sector so that services can improve and reach more people, even in rural areas.
When it comes to content, UCC’s role is limited. It does not control every message shared by individuals. Instead, it enforces broad legal standards mainly for licensed broadcasters like radio and television stations. This ensures that content aired to the public follows national laws and respects public interest, without overstepping into personal communication.
In simple terms, UCC helps keep Uganda connected. It ensures communication services are safe, fair, and accessible. By regulating technology, issuing licenses, and guiding the communication market, UCC supports the growth of the country’s communication sector while protecting the public.
