Police have launched investigations into a fatal road crash in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, that claimed the lives of 14 people after a taxi collided with a Sino truck carrying sand along the Kampala–Masaka Highway.
The accident happened on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026, at around 11:00pm near Kamunga Trading Centre. It involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UA 662AQ and a Sino truck registration number UBS 040F.
According to police, the 14 people who died were all travelling in the taxi and were pronounced dead at the scene due to the impact of the crash.
Four other victims survived the accident with injuries and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Two of the injured victims were occupants of the taxi, while the other two were from the truck.
Police officers visited the scene and started investigations to establish what exactly caused the deadly collision. Authorities are also working to trace the truck driver who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash.
The Lwera Swamp section of the Kampala–Masaka Highway has over the years been known for serious road crashes, raising concerns about speeding, careless driving and failure by some motorists to follow road safety guidelines.
Police have urged drivers and other road users to exercise maximum caution, especially during night journeys, and to always observe traffic regulations to prevent loss of lives on the roads.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing, with police expected to provide more details after completing their inquiries.
