Police in Kassanda are investigating a shocking incident in which an unidentified woman disguised herself as a medical officer and fled with a three-day-old baby from Kiganda Health Center IV. The incident has left the community in fear and raised serious concerns about security in health facilities.
According to reports, the baby girl belongs to Muhindo Joachim and Nalubowa Ruth, residents of Katosi Cell in Kiganda Town Council, Kassanda District. The couple had taken their newborn to the health center on March 12, 2026, after the baby developed complications. She was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, where she responded well to treatment. On March 14, she was transferred to the postnatal ward as she awaited discharge.
However, events took a tragic turn on March 15. An unknown woman entered the postnatal ward pretending to be a medical worker. She moved around confidently, checking on patients and reading their treatment notes, which made her appear legitimate. When she reached the baby’s bed, she picked her up and reviewed her records. She then told the mother that the baby’s condition had suddenly worsened and urgently needed medicine that had not yet been given.
To make her story believable, the suspect gave the mother 10,000 shillings and asked her to quickly go and buy the medicine from a nearby pharmacy. Trusting the woman, the mother rushed out, hoping to save her child. Unfortunately, when she returned, both the woman and the baby were gone. The suspect had used the opportunity to escape undetected.
A case was immediately reported to Kiganda Police Station, and investigations are now underway to track down the suspect and rescue the baby. Police are appealing to members of the public in Kiganda Town, Kassanda District, and the entire Wamala region to remain alert. Anyone who may notice a woman with a newborn baby, especially one who was not known to be pregnant, is urged to report to the nearest police station.
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to find the child and bring the suspect to justice. The incident serves as a painful reminder for families and health facilities to remain vigilant at all times.
