Police in Bushenyi have arrested the driver of motor vehicle registration number UBR 062M after he was found carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity and allegedly refusing to stop when ordered by a traffic officer.
The incident happened on Monday, 13 July 2026, at around 10:45 a.m., after a passenger aboard the vehicle contacted the Police Command Centre to report that the vehicle was overloaded. The alert prompted traffic officers along the Mbarara–Bushenyi Road to take immediate action.
Traffic officers who were on duty attempted to stop the vehicle at Nyarutobo along the busy highway, but the driver reportedly ignored the lawful instructions from the officers and instead sped away, putting the lives of passengers and other road users at risk.
Following the driver’s refusal to stop, police officers coordinated with teams ahead of the route. The vehicle was later intercepted and impounded in Sheema District, where the driver was arrested and taken into custody.
The suspect is currently detained at Bushenyi Central Police Station (CPS) and is expected to face prosecution in court over charges of carrying passengers beyond the allowed capacity and failing to stop when directed by a police officer in uniform.
Police have warned drivers and other road users against violating traffic regulations, especially acts that put human lives at risk. Authorities said strict enforcement operations will continue to ensure safety on Uganda’s roads.
The Police also praised the passenger who reported the dangerous behaviour, saying such responsible actions play an important role in preventing accidents and protecting lives.
Members of the public have been encouraged to continue reporting reckless driving, overloading, and other dangerous road practices so that authorities can respond quickly and take appropriate action.
