IG Steps In! Church of Uganda Regains Land Lost to Fraud

Must read

The Church of Uganda has regained ownership of a key piece of land along Port Bell Road, following an intervention by the Inspectorate of Government (IG). The land, originally under the custody of the Church’s Registered Trustees, had been fraudulently transferred to businessman Meddie Mayega Nyago through a special certificate of title issued by the Land Registration Department. The original certificate, which rightfully belonged to the Church, was ignored, prompting complaints that eventually reached the IG.

Investigations by the IG revealed the fraudulent nature of the land transaction, confirming that the Church of Uganda had been wrongly stripped of its rights. Acting decisively, the Inspector General of Government (IGG) directed the Commissioner of Land Registration to cancel the special certificate of title for Plot 107, Port Bell Road, which had been issued on October 28, 2022. A follow-up search report, dated March 9, 2026, confirmed that the Church’s ownership had been reinstated on the National Land Information System (NLIS).

This landmark decision highlights the IG’s strong commitment to enforcing the rule of law, ensuring transparency, and holding public offices accountable. The investigation sends a clear message that fraudulent activities, even in the Land Registration Department, will not be tolerated, and that justice will be served to rightful owners. The Church of Uganda can now fully reclaim its property, securing both its legal rights and its trust within the community.

For further information, the IG’s office has provided contact details for inquiries, demonstrating the organization’s continued dedication to openness and public service.
