Police at Old Kampala have successfully recovered a firearm at Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, Kampala Central Division, following a suspicious incident on the morning of April 14th, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. when a bus conductor, engaged in the task of loading passengers onto a bus headed for Mbarara, was approached by a seemingly ordinary passenger. The individual requested to have his luggage transported on the bus, a common request that usually doesn’t raise concern. However, as part of routine safety procedures, the conductor asked the passenger to open his bag for an inspection. To his surprise, the passenger refused.
This refusal raised immediate suspicion, prompting the conductor to act on his instincts. Despite the initial denial, the conductor took the decision to physically check the luggage. To his shock, during the inspection, he found an object resembling a firearm concealed inside a white polythene bag, which was further hidden within another bag, locally referred to as “usofia.”
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the conductor swiftly alerted the authorities, and within minutes, a police task force arrived at the scene. Upon further inspection, officers discovered that the object was indeed a firearm—an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine and no ammunition. The weapon, which had been carefully concealed to avoid detection, was immediately seized by the authorities.
Despite the prompt response from law enforcement, the suspect had already fled the scene, disappearing before officers could make an arrest. The individual is currently on the run, and police efforts to track and apprehend him continue. Investigations are ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the details of the suspect’s identity and possible motives.
This discovery has raised serious questions regarding the potential use of this firearm and whether the suspect intended to use it for unlawful purposes. As the police continue their search, the public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The recovery of the weapon serves as a stark reminder of the importance of routine checks and the vigilance of ordinary citizens in preventing potential criminal activities.
In a statement, Spokesperson Kawala Racheal of Kampala Metropolitan Police emphasized that the incident highlights the need for continued cooperation between the police and the public in ensuring the safety and security of Kampala residents. “We are committed to investigating this matter thoroughly, and we urge anyone with information to come forward,” she said.
The authorities have assured the public that measures are being taken to ensure the swift apprehension of the suspect, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
