A heated online exchange has emerged between senior Ugandan leaders, drawing national attention and stirring debate about conduct within the country’s security institutions.
The controversy began when Kahinda Otafiire posted a strong message addressed to Hon. Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu. In his remarks, Otafiire warned against any tolerance of extrajudicial killings, especially those allegedly linked to some officers in the Crime Intelligence Directorate. He stressed that such actions, if true, must not be allowed to continue and called for respect for the rule of law and protection of human life.
His comments quickly spread on social media and triggered intense reactions from different political and security circles.
Shortly after, Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba responded publicly. In his statement, Muhoozi referred to a cabinet minister who had allegedly described himself as a leopard while criticizing officers of the Crime Intelligence Directorate. He warned that such remarks had angered “lions” and suggested that the minister was “dangerously close to being arrested.”
The exchange has since sparked mixed reactions among Ugandans. Some citizens and commentators argue that Otafiire raised a serious issue that needs attention, especially regarding allegations of abuse of power by security personnel. Others feel his public remarks could be seen as undermining security institutions.
Muhoozi’s response has also divided opinion. Some support his firm tone, saying it shows discipline and protection of the integrity of security agencies. However, critics believe his wording was too aggressive and risks escalating tensions between top officials.
The incident has once again highlighted how disagreements among senior leaders are increasingly unfolding on social media platforms, where messages spread quickly and generate public debate. Many observers are now calling for restraint, urging leaders to handle sensitive security matters through official and structured channels instead of public confrontations online.
