Court has adjourned the bail matter involving opposition politician and Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi to September 15, after state prosecutors reportedly objected to his release, describing him as a “danger to society.”
The development has attracted strong reactions from Kivumbi’s supporters, who have rejected the state’s position and continued to demand his freedom. They argue that the opposition leader has himself been a victim of political repression rather than a threat to the public.
According to his supporters, Kivumbi’s legal troubles began following the January 15 events, when members of his campaign team were allegedly attacked and killed. They claim that instead of those responsible being brought to justice, Kivumbi was subsequently portrayed as a criminal and spent more than seven months in custody.
His supporters further allege that after he was initially granted bail, his freedom was short-lived. They claim he was later abducted and held for several weeks before eventually resurfacing while facing fresh charges, which they describe as trumped-up and politically motivated.
The latest court adjournment means Kivumbi will remain in custody as he waits for the next hearing. His supporters are now looking to September 15, hoping that the court will consider his application and grant him bail.
The case has also renewed debate about the treatment of opposition politicians and political prisoners in Uganda. Supporters of Kivumbi say the continued detention of political figures raises serious questions about human rights, political freedoms and the rule of law.
They have continued to call for justice and the release of what they describe as political prisoners, using the hashtag #FreeAllPoliticalPrisonersInUganda. They maintain that Kivumbi should be allowed to defend himself while enjoying his freedom, unless the court finds sufficient legal grounds to keep him behind bars.
As the next court date approaches, attention will remain focused on whether Kivumbi will be granted bail or whether the state will succeed in its opposition to his release.
