The High Court has given opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya two weeks to decide whether they will accept lawyers appointed by the state or choose their own legal representatives.
The decision was made as the court continued handling the case involving Besigye, Lutale, and Capt. Denis Oola. The accused persons have been facing legal proceedings, with the issue of legal representation becoming a key matter before the court.
The court directed Besigye and Lutale to use the two-week period to either agree to work with state-appointed lawyers or make arrangements to secure advocates of their choice. The move is aimed at ensuring that the case proceeds without further delays while protecting the accused persons’ right to legal representation.
Meanwhile, Dr. Besigye, Hajj Lutale Kamulegeya, and Capt. Denis Oola have been remanded until July 29 as they await further proceedings. The remand order means they will remain in custody until the next court appearance unless the court issues further directions.
The development comes as the legal team and the accused continue to raise concerns surrounding the progress of the case. The court is expected to receive their decision on legal representation when they return for the next hearing.
The case involving Besigye and his co-accused has attracted significant public attention, with supporters and observers closely following each stage of the proceedings.
