President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a clear and firm directive to halt the destruction of Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in a decisive move to protect Uganda’s natural heritage. This follows reports of deforestation and encroachment in the area, raising serious environmental concerns. Museveni’s order is a step toward ensuring that Bugoma, along with other vital forests like Budongo, is preserved for future generations.
The President has specifically directed the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) to investigate allegations that some Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers are involved in the illegal activities threatening Bugoma Forest. This decision is significant, as it sends a strong message that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law when it comes to environmental protection. By assigning an incorruptible leader, such as General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to lead the investigation, the President has made it clear that this matter will be taken seriously.
Along with the investigation, the President has ordered the immediate eviction of all encroachers from Bugoma Forest. This timely action is crucial, as encroachment on government-owned land has been a growing problem across the country. Museveni’s directive emphasizes the need to act swiftly and without compromise to protect the integrity of this important forest reserve. Encroachers, who have illegally settled in Bugoma, will not be allowed to continue their activities, and no compensation will be offered, as doing so would only encourage impunity.
In addition to this, President Museveni has entrusted the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) with the responsibility of protecting the forest. By transferring this role to UWA, which has expertise in managing Uganda’s natural resources, the President is ensuring that Bugoma Forest will receive the protection it needs. This will help safeguard not only the biodiversity within the forest but also its role in maintaining environmental balance, such as carbon dioxide absorption and water catchment.
President Museveni has also called for Bugoma Forest to be upgraded into a National Park. This move is part of a broader effort to provide the forest with maximum protection and recognition. As a critical part of Uganda’s ecosystem, Bugoma is essential for maintaining a healthy environment. Upgrading it to National Park status would ensure that the forest is protected by law and managed in a way that benefits both the environment and the country.
