Nine officials from Kaliro District have been arrested over allegations of abuse of office, embezzlement of government funds and other corruption-related offences.
The arrests are part of an investigation into alleged misuse of public resources and irregularities in the management of government programmes and funds in the district. The officials are expected to face questioning as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offences.
Those arrested include Tiinkamanyire Charles, the Principal Agriculture Officer, and Thomas Kibalya, the Senior Agriculture Officer. They are among officials whose work involves overseeing government agricultural programmes and services in the district.
Also arrested is Latif Watimba, an Assistant Agriculture Engineer. His arrest adds to the growing number of district officials being investigated over alleged financial and administrative misconduct.
The list further includes Dr. Zaid Atuma, the District Health Officer, who has been taken into custody as investigations into the alleged offences continue.
Other officials arrested are Nsako James, the Principal Human Resource Officer, and Kamoga Edward, the District Education Officer. Their respective departments are responsible for human resource management and education services within the district.
Takuwa Janat, the District Physical Planner, has also been arrested, alongside Eng. Paul Nyonyintono, a former District Engineer. The ninth suspect is Mbalumya Fred Max, the Production Officer.
The arrests have raised concern in Kaliro as authorities continue efforts to strengthen accountability in the use of government resources. Investigators are expected to examine documents, financial records and other evidence to determine whether public funds were misused and whether the suspects have any responsibility for the alleged offences.
