Police in Katwe have launched a major operation aimed at combating the rising theft of motorcycles in the area. The operation, which took place on April 17, 2026, was a response to growing public concerns over the increasing number of stolen motorcycles in neighborhoods such as Katwe, Ndeeba, and Muganzirwaza. These areas had been particularly affected by criminal activities related to motorbike theft, leading to widespread fear among local residents.
During the operation, law enforcement officials in Katwe managed to arrest 29 male suspects in the Muganzirwaza and Mutebi zones, located in the Rubaga division of Kampala district. The suspects were apprehended in connection with the theft and trafficking of stolen motorcycles and their parts. The police were able to seize valuable evidence, including 24 motorcycle spare parts and old number plates, some of which were believed to be linked to stolen bikes.
Among the recovered items were six motorcycle number plates with the following registration numbers: UFY 763/A, UGG 874/E, UMA 304DR, UET 612/L, and UMA 267GT. These plates are crucial in identifying and tracing the stolen motorcycles, with the police hoping to track down the original owners and dismantle the illegal network involved in motorbike theft.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the authorities also cordoned off 10 shops in Muganzirwaza, which are suspected of being involved in the illegal trade of motorcycle parts. These shops are under scrutiny, and a thorough search is expected to take place soon. The police have assured the public that their operations will continue in an effort to curb the escalating crime rate and restore safety in the region.
