Police in Kitgum District are investigating a shocking murder case after a man reportedly died following a fight that allegedly started over a roasted rat.
The incident happened on May 8, 2026, at around 1:00 pm in Tultul Central Village, Katwotwo Parish, Orom East Sub-county in Kitgum District. According to the report filed at Orom Police Station later that evening, the deceased was identified as 44-year-old Omony Charles, an Acholi peasant and resident of the same village.
Preliminary police findings indicate that Omony Charles and another man identified as Okot David were together roasting rats when a disagreement broke out between them. It is alleged that the suspect accused Omony of eating his rat, leading to a violent fight between the two men.
During the confrontation, Omony reportedly became unconscious after being assaulted. Residents quickly rushed him to Orom Health Centre III for medical attention, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.
The matter was reported to police by Lotyang James, a 33-year-old peasant and resident of Tultul Central Village. Police officers later visited the scene of the incident together with detectives and Scene of Crime Officers to begin investigations.
Authorities confirmed that the body of the deceased was transferred to Namukora Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue. Police also confirmed that one suspect, identified as Okot David, has been arrested to assist with ongoing inquiries into the matter.
The incident has left residents in shock, with many expressing sadness that a small misunderstanding reportedly escalated into a deadly fight. Police have urged members of the public to avoid violence and instead seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes.
