At the Kawempe Magistrates Court, tensions remained high as the bail hearing for detained members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) once again ended without success. Among those closely followed in the case is Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform, alongside other party supporters who are facing charges described by their legal team as “unlawful drilling.”
The defence team argued that the accused have already spent a long time on remand and now qualify for mandatory bail since the prosecution has not completed its investigations. They insisted that continued detention without concluded investigations is unfair and unjustified. However, the presiding magistrate ruled against the bail application, stating that the defence did not present new or strong enough grounds to change earlier decisions made by the court.
The magistrate further noted that the arguments presented were not sufficient to justify a different outcome from previous bail hearings. As a result, bail was denied once again, leaving the accused in custody. The court then adjourned the matter to 26th June 2026, extending the waiting period for both the defence team and supporters who had gathered hoping for release.
The case has continued to draw attention from supporters of the National Unity Platform, an opposition political party in Uganda. They remain vocal in their solidarity with the detainees, expressing concern over repeated delays and what they see as slow progress in the prosecution’s investigations. Many argue that the repeated adjournments reflect a broader problem of prolonged remand in politically sensitive cases.
Despite the setback, supporters maintain hope and continue to call for fairness and justice for those detained. They believe that continued pressure and public attention will eventually lead to a more favorable outcome. For now, however, the accused remain in custody as they await the next court date and another chance to apply for bail.
