Proceedings in the case involving former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have been adjourned to July 9 after the court was informed that he could not be produced in person due to medical reasons.
The court was told by the Uganda Prisons Service that Lukwago is currently undergoing specialised medical investigations and treatment. Because of this, prison authorities said he was not in a condition to be brought to court for the scheduled proceedings on Tuesday.
Following this communication, the court session was adjourned, and the matter was rescheduled for July 9. The decision effectively delays the hearing of the case as the court awaits further updates on his health situation.
Speaking to journalists after the closed-door session, Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, confirmed that prison authorities had formally informed the court about their client’s medical condition. He explained that Lukwago was receiving treatment and therefore could not physically appear before the judge.
Lukwago is facing a charge of misprision of treason, a serious allegation under Ugandan law. The case has continued to attract attention given his long-standing role in Uganda’s political and legal landscape.
As the new date approaches, all attention will be on whether he will be fit to appear in court on July 9 or if further adjournments may follow depending on his medical condition and recovery progress.
