The High Court of Uganda has officially scheduled July 3 at 2:00pm for the hearing of the bail application involving opposition leader Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale. The announcement comes amid ongoing legal proceedings that have attracted wide public and political attention across the country.
The two appeared earlier before Justice Emmanuel Baguma at the High Court of Uganda for what was expected to be a ruling on their application. The application challenges aspects of their detention and also raises objections related to the involvement of the Chief of Defence Forces and the commencement of the treason trial.
Instead of issuing a ruling immediately, the court deferred the matter and set a new date for a full hearing. This means that both the defense team and the prosecution will return to court on July 3 to present detailed arguments regarding the bail request.
The case remains one of the most closely followed legal matters in Uganda due to its high-profile nature and the seriousness of the treason charges involved. Besigye, a veteran opposition figure, has long been a central figure in Uganda’s political landscape, while his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale, continues to face the same charges as proceedings move forward.
Justice Emmanuel Baguma will preside over the upcoming hearing, where the court is expected to carefully examine the legal grounds for granting or denying bail. The outcome could also influence how the broader treason trial progresses in the coming weeks.
As the July 3 date approaches, public attention remains firmly fixed on the courtroom, with many awaiting clarity on whether bail will be granted or if the accused will remain in custody as the trial continues.
