Court Grants Bail to NUP’s Muwanga Kivumbi in Terrorism Case

Must read

The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Wandegeya has granted bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Central Uganda and former Butambala County MP, Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi.

Kivumbi was granted a cash bail of Shs 10 million, while each of his co-accused persons was granted cash bail of Shs 1 million. The court decision allows them to await the hearing of their case while outside custody.

Kivumbi and his co-accused are facing terrorism charges following their arrests between January 2 and 14, 2026, in Butambala District. The arrests followed a security operation at Kivumbi’s home, during which more than seven people were reportedly shot dead.

The accused persons applied for bail on May 4, arguing that they had met the legal requirements for release pending trial. Their lawyers told court that they were entitled to bail as they prepared to defend themselves against the charges.

The prosecution had accused the suspects of involvement in acts linked to terrorism, but the accused have denied the allegations. Under the law, they remain innocent until proven guilty by court.

The bail ruling was welcomed by Kivumbi’s supporters, who described the decision as a relief and thanked God for the outcome. The case will continue as the court examines the evidence presented by both sides.
