The Ministry of Local Government has warned public servants that they are not eligible to contest in Local Council elections unless they have legally resigned from government service.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, the ministry reminded teachers, health workers, administrative staff, extension workers, and other government employees that they must leave public service at least 30 days before nomination if they intend to contest for any Local Council position.
The directive is based on Section 129(5) of the Local Governments Act, which requires public officers seeking elective political positions to first vacate their government jobs.
The ministry said public servants are expected to remain politically neutral while holding office and warned that taking part in partisan political activities, including contesting for elections without resignation, violates the law.
Minister Balaam said the government will work with the Electoral Commission and other relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the legal requirements during the ongoing Local Council elections.
He also called upon all Ugandans to participate peacefully in the electoral process while respecting the laws governing public service and political participation.
