The High Court has directed police to investigate the whereabouts of Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi and provide a report within seven days after authorities denied having him in their custody.
The order was issued after an application for a Habeas Corpus was filed seeking to compel authorities to produce Hon. Kivumbi before court and explain the circumstances surrounding his reported disappearance. However, the court said it could not issue the order immediately because it first needed to establish who is holding him.
Police have denied having Hon. Kivumbi in their custody, leaving uncertainty over where he is and who is responsible for his detention. The court has now asked the police to carry out investigations and return with a report on his whereabouts.
The development comes 12 days after Hon. Kivumbi was reportedly taken away in broad daylight. His family, supporters, and colleagues have continued demanding answers, expressing concern over the lack of information about his location and wellbeing.
The court’s decision means that the matter will remain pending until the next hearing scheduled for 29th July. By that time, Hon. Kivumbi could have spent up to 19 days without his whereabouts being publicly known if no breakthrough is made.
Supporters of the legislator have raised concerns about the prolonged silence, arguing that every person has a right to know where a detained individual is being held and to have access to legal protection, family, and medical attention where necessary.
The case has attracted public attention, with calls for authorities to provide clear information and ensure that Hon. Kivumbi’s rights are respected as investigations continue.
