Police in Wamala Region have arrested five suspects accused of murdering a couple in a robbery attack that shocked residents of Myanzi Sub-county in Kassanda District.
The incident happened on July 2, 2026, when unknown attackers raided the home of Mr Lukwago in Lukira Village, Myanzi Sub-county. During the attack, the suspects allegedly killed his workers, a couple identified as the late Ssali Joseph, 48, and his wife, the late Mariza Regina.
The attackers also reportedly stole an unspecified amount of money and seven bags of coffee before escaping from the scene.
The body of Ssali Joseph was discovered the following day by residents led by Lukira Village Chairman Kakinda Sulaiman, who immediately reported the matter to Myanzi Police Station. The body of his wife, Mariza Regina, was later recovered on July 8, 2026, in neighbouring Kyaseta Village, where it had been partially buried.
The gruesome killings caused fear and sadness among residents of Lukira Village, Myanzi Sub-county, Kassanda District, and the wider Wamala Region.
Following the incident, police investigators launched an intensive hunt for the suspects, using leads gathered from the crime scene and other investigative methods. After weeks of following different leads, police made a breakthrough with the arrest of one suspect from Masaka City, which later led to the arrest of four other suspects in Myanzi Sub-county.
The suspects arrested have been identified as Nakavuma Joan, 38, a resident of Katwe in Masaka City; Kasumba Babangida, 26, a casual worker from Kalama LC1, Myanzi Parish; Nsereko Meddy, also known as Baamu Mukooki, 32, a resident of Kalama LC1; Kule Damian, 24, a farmer and boda boda rider from Kalama LC1; and Yamulemye John, also known as Doctor, 23, a casual worker from the same area.
Police say several exhibits have been recovered from the suspects as investigations continue. Among the items recovered are motorcycles allegedly used by the suspects to travel to and from the scene of crime.
The Wamala Regional Police leadership has assured the public that significant progress has been made in fighting crime through improved investigation methods and modern crime-fighting tools.
Police Regional Spokesperson SSP L Kigozi said the combination of professional investigators and modern technology, including forensic analysis, tracking devices, CCTV footage, and canine units, has helped police identify and apprehend criminals involved in serious crimes.
He appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with police, noting that effective crime prevention and investigation require strong support from the communities being served.
The five suspects are expected to appear before court once the Resident State Attorney in Kassanda approves the charges against them.
