Officials from Uganda Airlines have failed to appear before the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) today, despite being summoned to respond to concerns raised during last week’s inspection at Entebbe International Airport.
The committee had expected the airline officials to appear and explain the findings made during the inspection. However, their absence left members of COSASE concerned and questioning why the officials had failed to honour the summons.
The inspection at Entebbe International Airport was carried out last week as part of the committee’s oversight responsibilities. The findings raised issues that the committee wanted Uganda Airlines management to clarify before lawmakers.
With the officials absent, some committee members reportedly called on the chairperson to take action against the airline for failing to appear when summoned. They argued that government agencies and public institutions should take parliamentary oversight seriously and provide answers when required.
The failure of Uganda Airlines officials to attend the meeting is likely to put further pressure on the airline’s management, especially as COSASE continues to examine the operations and performance of government institutions.
Committee members are expected to seek an explanation for the absence and may consider recalling the officials to appear before the committee. The committee’s concern also highlights the importance of accountability among public entities, particularly those responsible for managing public resources.
As COSASE continues its work, attention will now turn to whether Uganda Airlines officials will appear at the next scheduled meeting and provide explanations regarding the issues identified during the Entebbe airport inspection.
