Police in Sembabule District have arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Muhwezi Yoweri over an alleged attempted murder incident in which his sister-in-law and her one-year-old child were brutally attacked using a panga.

The suspect, a resident of Kinoni Village, Lubale Parish, Kyera Sub-county in Sembabule District, was arrested after a manhunt by police and members of the community following the attack that left the victims seriously injured.

According to police, the incident happened on 19th August 2026 at around 9:00am at Kinoni Village after a domestic misunderstanding between Muhwezi and his sister-in-law, identified as Kamusiime Faith, aged 20.

Police said that during the disagreement, the suspect allegedly picked up a panga and attacked Kamusiime, cutting her on the face and back. In the process, the child who was being carried on her back was also injured, with the baby’s right foot reportedly cut off.

After the attack, the suspect reportedly fled from the scene as police and community members launched a search for him. He was later arrested in Rwemikoma Village, Kazo District, while allegedly attempting to escape towards areas of Kazo.

The incident happened at the compound of the suspect’s mother, which is shared by the family members involved.

Police said preliminary findings indicate that the attack was linked to a domestic disagreement over food preparation. The suspect allegedly complained that whenever visitors came home, it was his sister-in-law who prepared food instead of his wife.

The Greater Masaka Police spokesperson, SP Kasirye Twaaha, confirmed that the suspect was in police custody and investigations into the matter were ongoing.

Police have warned members of the public against using violence to resolve family disputes, urging communities to seek peaceful ways of handling disagreements before they escalate into serious crimes.
