MTN Uganda Pays UGX 50.55 Billion to UCC to Boost Communication Services

Must read

Telecommunications giant MTN Uganda has made a major financial contribution to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), fulfilling its legal obligations as part of its license agreement. This year, MTN handed over a total of UGX 50.55 billion, which represents 2% of its gross annual revenue a significant increase from last year’s UGX 42.5 billion.

This contribution is not unique to MTN. All licensed telecom operators in Uganda are required by law to pay 2% of their total yearly income to the UCC. This regulation ensures that telecom companies play an active role in improving communication services across the country.

The money collected from telecom companies serves a greater purpose. Half of the money (1%) goes to the national Consolidated Fund, which is used to support government activities across various sectors. The other half (1%) remains with the UCC and is directed specifically toward the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF).

This fund is vital in helping the Ugandan government bring communication services to places that are either underserved or completely unserved—mainly rural and remote areas that many private service providers might overlook. The goal is to make sure every Ugandan, no matter where they live, has access to essential communication services, such as mobile networks, internet, and broadcasting.

As one of the leading telecom companies in Uganda, MTN’s growing annual contribution shows how its business is expanding and how it’s playing a bigger role in national development. The increase from UGX 42.5 billion to UGX 50.55 billion also reflects the company’s commitment to not only meet regulatory requirements but to also support the government’s digital transformation agenda.

The Uganda Communications Commission, through UCUSAF, uses these funds to build communication towers, support internet access in schools and health centers, and develop digital literacy programs. These efforts are key to closing the digital divide and ensuring that all Ugandans can benefit from the opportunities that come with improved connectivity.

As Uganda continues to push toward becoming a digitally empowered society, contributions like this one from MTN Uganda are essential. They help fund the infrastructure and services needed to keep everyone connected, informed, and included in the country’s economic and social growth.
