Traffic Police have issued a strong warning to parents, schools, drivers and transport operators to prioritise the safety of children as schools break off for the holiday this week.
Speaking on the safety of children travelling during the holiday period, Traffic Police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael said authorities are increasing their focus on vehicles transporting children as many families prepare to travel to different destinations across the country.
Kananura reminded bus operators that vehicles carrying schoolchildren must have a valid inspection report and the required permission from the Ministry of Works and Transport. The buses must also operate strictly between 6:00am and 6:00pm.
Drivers are required to have valid driving licences and driver’s badges, while a valid photograph of the driver must be displayed inside the bus. The vehicles must also meet all applicable Public Service Vehicle requirements and comply with traffic laws and regulations.
The same safety measures apply to taxis and other vehicles transporting children. Traffic Police said such vehicles must meet all inspection and safety requirements and operate within the prescribed hours.
Kananura warned parents, schools and transport operators against putting children’s lives at risk for the sake of convenience or profit.
He said traffic operations will continue throughout the holiday, with particular attention being given to vehicles carrying children.
Parents have been urged to carefully check the vehicles used to transport their children and avoid boarding vehicles that are poorly maintained, overcrowded or operating illegally.
Drivers have also been reminded to exercise extra caution, avoid reckless driving and respect traffic regulations as roads are expected to become busier during the holiday period.
Traffic Police say protecting children is a shared responsibility, and every effort must be made to ensure they reach their destinations safely.
As families begin their holiday journeys, authorities are urging everyone to make road safety a priority.
Safe travel, safe holidays.
