Must read

In a major boost to data collection and statistical research, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has donated over 5,000 tablets to various higher learning institutions and cultural kingdoms across Uganda. This generous gesture is aimed at strengthening the National Statistical System (NSS) by empowering key institutions with the tools they need to carry out high-quality statistical activities such as data collection, research, and analysis.

UBOS, as the national institution responsible for coordinating and supervising the NSS, has shown its commitment to improving statistical capacity. The donation is part of its broader mission to ensure reliable, timely, and quality statistics to support development planning and decision-making.

Among the beneficiaries of this donation are well-established universities like Makerere University, which received 700 tablets, Kyambogo University with 350, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology, also receiving 350 tablets. Other institutions like Gulu University, Lira University, Busitema University, and the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education each received 200 tablets.

UBOS also extended support to cultural institutions, recognizing their role in community-based research and heritage data. Notably, the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom received 550 tablets, Buganda Kingdom and Busoga Kingdom each received 500 tablets, while the Rwenzururu Kingdom received 120 tablets.

In total, UBOS distributed 5,163 tablets to these institutions. This move not only supports the institutions’ efforts to collect and analyze data but also strengthens collaboration between UBOS and both academic and cultural partners.

To officially hand over the tablets, UBOS invited representatives from the beneficiary institutions to a formal function held on Monday, 30th June 2025 at Statistics House in Kampala. Each institution was asked to send a maximum of two officials, one of whom must be an authorized representative to receive the devices.

This initiative highlights UBOS’s continued dedication to promoting evidence-based planning and development. By equipping educational and cultural institutions with modern technology, UBOS is paving the way for a more informed and statistically empowered Uganda.
