Kamuli District has been plunged into fear and anxiety following the shooting and killing of Sowedi Egumbye, husband to Kamuli District Woman MP aspirant Sarah Auma. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, just hours before the NRM party primaries, casting a shadow over the electoral process.
Police report that the confrontation happened around 11pm at the home of Buzaaya County MP Martin Muzaale. A group allegedly linked to Auma’s campaign team reportedly arrived in a convoy and forcefully broke into Muzaale’s compound by ramming the gate with one of their vehicles.
According to Busoga North Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, the group was armed with dangerous weapons such as pangas and hammers. Some individuals were injured during the attack, and police say the group tried to flee the scene when officers responded to an emergency call. The weapons were recovered during the police operation.
Authorities believe the raid may have been politically motivated, suggesting an attempt to disrupt or influence the outcome of the NRM primaries. Police also pointed out that the attack took place well past the official campaign cutoff time, raising further questions about its purpose.
The killing of Egumbye has triggered public outcry, with community members and leaders calling for calm, justice, and a thorough investigation. Many residents now fear that if tensions aren’t addressed quickly, the district could see more violence during the ongoing political season.
Security has since been heightened across Kamuli as the primaries continue under a cloud of uncertainty. This unfortunate event serves as a serious reminder of the risks involved in high-stakes political contests — and the urgent need for peace, restraint, and transparency in Uganda’s electoral process.
