Uganda is preparing for a major shift in its military leadership as several high-ranking army generals are set to retire in July 2027. Among the most notable names on the retirement list is General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the former Chief of Defence Forces and current Minister of State for Trade. Gen. Mbadi has served Uganda for decades and is widely respected for his leadership and professionalism both in military operations and in government.
The list of retiring officers also includes General Edward Katumba Wamala, another prominent figure in Uganda’s defence and transport sectors. His retirement marks the end of a long and distinguished career in both the military and civilian leadership.
Other top commanders scheduled to step down include Lt. Gen. Charles Awany Otema, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, Maj. Gen. Godfrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, and Maj. Gen. Henry Ndarubweine Masiko. These generals have played key roles in shaping the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) over the years.
Also set to retire are notable Major Generals like Apolo Kasiita Gowa, Leopold Kyanda, and Abel Kandiho, as well as several Brigadier Generals such as Edson Muhanguzi, Bekunda Besigye Cyrus, Winston Byaruhanga, and Stephen Tumwesigye.
The long list continues with more distinguished officers including Brig. Gen. Tom Kikoyo Kabuye, Sam Omara, Fred Rugadya Akiiki, Mike Samuel Kisame, Patrick Mwesigye, Fred Mwesigye, Herbert Rwego Mbonye, and Simon Nicholas Ocan. Others include Metland K. Bitumbika, Cyil Mawa Muhindo, Charles Bakahumura, Charles Asiimwe, and Kahangire.
This planned retirement signals a generational change within the UPDF and is expected to pave the way for younger officers to take up key leadership roles. It also reflects the ongoing professionalization and restructuring efforts within the Ugandan military. As these generals prepare to retire, they leave behind a legacy of discipline, dedication, and service to the nation.
