The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced that MultiChoice Uganda Ltd and GOtv Uganda Ltd have applied to transfer their licenses through a change in control. According to the application, the control of the two companies would move from MultiChoice Group Limited to Groupe Canal+, a leading international media and entertainment company.
As part of its mandate to ensure transparency and public participation in regulatory matters, UCC has invited members of the public to submit written comments regarding this application. The Commission has given 14 days from the date of the notice for interested parties, consumers, and stakeholders to share their views.
This development comes at a time when the broadcasting and pay-TV industry in Uganda continues to evolve, with major players seeking strategic partnerships to strengthen their market position. If approved, the transfer could mark a significant shift in the ownership structure of two of the most popular subscription TV service providers in the country—GOtv and DStv.
The involvement of Groupe Canal+ could potentially bring new opportunities in content variety, service quality, and investment in the Ugandan media space. However, UCC emphasizes the importance of public participation to ensure that the interests of consumers and the broadcasting sector as a whole are well protected.
Ugandans now have a unique chance to shape the conversation around the future of these services by submitting their feedback within the set deadline.
