As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, Teddy Anyuk, the NRM flag bearer for Orungo County in Amuria District, has called on politicians and supporters to embrace peace and avoid political violence.
Speaking to local leaders and supporters this week, Anyuk, who will face the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo, emphasized that true leadership is about guiding communities toward prosperity, not creating conflict.
“A leader never takes the wrong direction. A leader never buys someone to go and cause violence. A leader shows you what to do in order to make ends meet. Please stay away from violence and be peaceful,” she said, urging all participants in the electoral process to act responsibly.
Her appeal comes amid rising political tensions in some parts of the country, where clashes between rival camps have been reported during party primaries and local campaigns. Anyuk’s call for non-violence aims to calm the situation and set a positive example.
Beyond promoting peace, Anyuk outlined her vision for Orungo County if elected. She promised to focus on youth empowerment, improved health services, better infrastructure, and enhanced access to clean water.
“Orungo is not going to be the same after I have attained the seat,” she said. “I want to create opportunities for young people, improve our roads, ensure functioning health facilities, and provide better water systems for everyone.”
Anyuk stressed that her development plans would rely on lobbying for government resources rather than personal funds. She has already started writing to ministries to secure support for projects that will benefit the community.
She also condemned acts of electoral malpractice, including vandalizing campaign posters, bribing youths, and spreading divisive propaganda. She advised young people not to be manipulated into engaging in violence on behalf of politicians.
“To the young people, do not accept to be used for violence. Ultimately, it is the voters who decide their leaders. Do not waste your energy fighting for someone else’s interests,” she warned.
Observers believe that Anyuk’s message of peace and development could resonate strongly with the youth, who make up the majority of the electorate. Her campaign emphasizes grassroots mobilization, community service, and creating opportunities for all residents of Orungo County.
