Elections Halted in Butebo After Violence and Loss of Ballot Papers

Must read

The Electoral Commission has announced the postponement of elections in Butebo District following serious interruptions that affected the voting process. According to the Commission, reports received indicate that there were incidents which led to the damage and loss of important election materials, including ballot papers.

These incidents disrupted polling activities in several sub-counties across the district, making it impossible to continue with a credible election process. The Commission explained that the interruptions were severe enough to affect the fairness and integrity of the elections. Ballot papers and other key materials are essential for free and fair voting, and their destruction or loss raises concerns about transparency and trust in the results.

As a result, continuing with the elections under such conditions would not meet the required electoral standards. In order to protect the integrity of the electoral process, the Electoral Commission decided to postpone elections for all elective positions in Butebo District. These include the District Chairperson, Directly Elected District Councillors, and District Women Councillors. The decision, the Commission said, was taken in the interest of democracy and to ensure that all voters are given a fair chance to participate when proper conditions are restored.

The Electoral Commission assured the public that it will announce a new date for the elections after the situation has been fully addressed. It emphasized that preparations will be made to ensure that the next polling exercise is peaceful, secure, and well-organized.Meanwhile, the Commission has called upon candidates, their agents, supporters, and the residents of Butebo District to remain calm and maintain peace and order. It urged all stakeholders to avoid violence and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to resolve the matter and prepare for fresh elections.
