Electoral Commission Gets UGX 56 Billion Boost for Long-Awaited LC Polls

Must read

The Government of Uganda has released UGX 56 billion to the Electoral Commission to support the conduct of the long-awaited Local Council (LC1 and LC2) and village women council elections across the country. The funds were released by the Ministry of Finance last Friday, bringing relief and renewed hope to thousands of election aspirants who have been waiting for the polls to take place.

For a long time, many citizens and political hopefuls have been uncertain about when these grassroots elections would be held. The delay had created frustration in several communities where LC leaders play an important role in local administration, dispute resolution, and coordination of government programs. The release of the funds now signals a clear step toward organizing the elections.

According to officials, the money will be used to facilitate key election activities such as voter verification, updating registers, training election officials, and deploying materials to different parts of the country. The Electoral Commission is expected to begin preparations immediately to ensure the process runs smoothly and in an orderly manner.

The LC1 and LC2 elections are very important in Uganda’s governance system because they form the foundation of leadership at the village and parish levels. These leaders are often the closest government representatives to the people, handling everyday issues and linking communities to higher authorities.

The inclusion of village women council elections is also seen as a major step in promoting women’s participation in leadership and decision-making at the grassroots level. Many women leaders have welcomed the funding, saying it will strengthen representation and give women a stronger voice in local governance.

With the release of UGX 56 billion, attention now shifts to the Electoral Commission to set clear timelines and ensure transparency in the entire process. Ugandans across the country are now watching closely, hoping the long-awaited elections will be conducted fairly, peacefully, and without further delay.
