The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety in Kampala has received a major boost in its efforts to improve road safety after being donated new traffic enforcement equipment, including breathalysers. The donation was officially received on 13 April 2026 and is aimed at strengthening the fight against drink driving, one of the leading causes of road crashes in the city.
The support was provided by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies together with the Global Road Safety Partnership. This initiative is part of a wider effort to reduce road accidents and save lives by improving enforcement of traffic laws and promoting safer road use behavior.
This project has been made possible through a partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority, working alongside Bloomberg Philanthropies under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety. Kampala is one of the cities benefiting from this global program aimed at reducing road traffic injuries and deaths.
According to officials, drink driving remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on Kampala roads, contributing significantly to crashes, injuries, and loss of life. The new breathalysers will help traffic police carry out more effective roadside checks and identify drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.
The traffic authorities emphasized that driving under the influence is illegal and puts not only the driver at risk but also passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. With the new equipment, enforcement efforts are expected to become stronger and more consistent, helping to deter offenders.
The Uganda Police Force will play a key role in using this equipment during routine checks and special operations. Officers have warned that anyone caught breaking drink-driving laws will face the full force of the law without exception.
Officials also expressed appreciation to all partners involved in the donation, noting that such collaborations are vital in improving road safety in Kampala. They stressed that making roads safer is a shared responsibility that requires government, partners, and the public to work together.
In conclusion, the new donation marks an important step forward in Kampala’s road safety efforts. It not only strengthens enforcement but also sends a strong message that drink driving will not be tolerated as the city continues to fight to reduce road accidents and save lives.
