Uganda Police have intensified operations against road traffic violations, leading to the interception and impounding of several vehicles in different parts of the country. The operations targeted drivers and vehicle owners who failed to comply with traffic laws, putting the lives of passengers and other road users at risk.
In Maya, two buses carrying pupils were impounded after police discovered that the drivers did not have valid driving badges and the vehicles lacked clearance from the relevant authorities. The pupils were safely escorted to their destination as police ensured that their safety was not compromised.
The drivers of the two buses have since been detained and will appear before court to answer charges related to the violations. Police said the action was necessary to protect children who depend on school transport and ensure that only approved and qualified drivers operate such vehicles.
Meanwhile, in Ibanda, police intercepted and impounded an omnibus after it was found carrying more passengers than allowed. The driver was arrested and will be taken to court for violating traffic regulations.
In another operation at the Njeru Police Checkpoint, six sugarcane trucks were intercepted over dangerous loading practices. The drivers were detained and are expected to face court proceedings over the offences.
Police said the ongoing operations are aimed at improving road safety and ensuring that all motorists follow traffic laws. Authorities warned drivers against reckless behaviour, illegal loading, and operating vehicles without the required documents, noting that such actions endanger the lives of passengers and other road users.
The enforcement exercise will continue across different areas of the country as police work to reduce road accidents and promote safer transport for all Ugandans.
