Shock in PLU as Muhoozi Withdraws Support for Anita Among and Tayebwa

Must read

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has caused fresh political debate after officially withdrawing its earlier endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament.

In a statement dated 12th May 2026 and signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, the political pressure group announced that the endorsement earlier issued on 11th March 2026 had been cancelled with immediate effect. The statement explained that the decision followed new guidance from PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Earlier in March, Gen. Muhoozi had reportedly directed all PLU-leaning Members of Parliament to support Anita Among for Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker. At the time, the endorsement was seen as a major political boost for the two leaders because of Muhoozi’s growing influence within Uganda’s political landscape.

However, the latest communication now shows a sudden shift in direction. According to the statement, PLU members have instead been instructed to support whichever candidates will officially be presented by President Yoweri Museveni for the powerful parliamentary positions.

The statement further emphasized discipline within the organization, saying that all PLU members must follow the commands, instructions, and guidance of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times. This message clearly shows the strong chain of command within the movement and highlights Muhoozi’s authority among his supporters.

The development has quickly attracted attention from political observers and members of the public, many of whom are now questioning what could have caused the sudden withdrawal of support. Some analysts believe the decision could be part of wider political negotiations ahead of the formation of the new Parliament.

Others see the move as a sign that President Museveni still holds the final say in deciding key leadership positions within the ruling establishment. By directing PLU members to wait for the President’s official guidance, the statement appears to place State House at the center of the decision-making process.

The announcement is also likely to create uncertainty among supporters of Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa, especially those who had already viewed the earlier endorsement as a confirmation of victory. Political temperatures are now expected to rise as Ugandans wait to see who President Museveni will finally back for the top parliamentary offices.

With the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions being among the most powerful in the country, every political signal matters. The latest decision by PLU has therefore added fresh suspense and excitement to Uganda’s political scene, leaving many eager to see what happens next.
