A dark cloud of grief has covered families and friends after a deadly road crash claimed the lives of six people in Gomba District during the early hours of Saturday morning. The fatal accident happened at Lumonya along the Maddu–Ssembabule Road at around 5:00am, turning what was supposed to be a joyful journey for a wedding ceremony into a heartbreaking tragedy.
According to reports, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UA 788DJ. The vehicle was transporting passengers from Ssembabule District to Nakasongola where they were expected to attend a wedding celebration. Witnesses and preliminary findings indicate that the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding before the taxi overturned several times along the road.
The impact of the crash was devastating. Four people died instantly at the scene as the vehicle rolled repeatedly, leaving passengers trapped in the wreckage. Other survivors were rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment, but sadly two more victims later died from serious injuries sustained during the accident.
Three other passengers survived the crash but suffered injuries of varying degrees. They are currently receiving treatment as police continue monitoring their condition. Residents near the scene described moments of panic and confusion as cries for help filled the area shortly after the accident occurred.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about reckless driving and speeding on Ugandan roads, especially during long-distance journeys and early morning travel. Authorities say many drivers continue ignoring speed limits despite repeated warnings, putting the lives of passengers and other road users at risk.
Police have since urged motorists to prioritize safety, avoid speeding and ensure vehicles are properly controlled at all times. Traffic officers say speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in the country, contributing to the loss of hundreds of lives every year.
The accident has left several families in mourning, with relatives struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their loved ones. What began as a journey to celebrate love and happiness ended in sorrow, tears and unanswered questions for many affected families.
