UBOS Strengthens Audit Excellence Through High-Level Awareness Session

Must read

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening accountability, transparency, and institutional performance through continuous engagement on the importance of internal audit. This was demonstrated during an Audit Awareness Session at the Bureau, where management and audit staff had the privilege of hosting Mr. Gervase Ndyanabo, Deputy Managing Director and Company Secretary of New Vision.

The session provided an opportunity for staff to gain valuable insights from one of Uganda’s seasoned professionals in governance and audit. Drawing from over 30 years of experience, Mr. Ndyanabo shared practical knowledge on the critical role internal auditors play in supporting organizations to achieve their goals and maintain high standards of performance.

During his presentation, Mr. Ndyanabo noted that internal auditors are not merely tasked with identifying weaknesses and gaps within organizations. Rather, they help identify solutions to challenges and contribute to performance improvement. By examining systems, processes, and controls, auditors provide recommendations that enable organizations to operate more efficiently and effectively.

He further emphasized that internal audit is a forward-looking function. Unlike the common perception that auditing focuses only on past activities, internal auditors provide detailed analytical reviews and foresight that help organizations anticipate risks and prepare for future opportunities and challenges. This strategic approach allows management to make informed decisions that support sustainable growth and institutional success.

Mr. Ndyanabo also highlighted the importance of confidentiality in the audit profession. He explained that internal auditors handle sensitive information and data with a high level of professionalism, making them trusted advisors to top management. Their commitment to confidentiality creates an environment where leaders can openly discuss issues and seek guidance on matters affecting the organization.

Another key message from the session was the need to empower and adequately finance internal audit functions. According to Mr. Ndyanabo, internal audit departments can only deliver maximum value when they are supported with the necessary resources, independence, and institutional backing. Strong audit functions contribute significantly to good governance, risk management, and improved organizational performance.

Speaking after the session, UBOS Executive Director and Chief Statistician, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, expressed appreciation to Mr. Ndyanabo for taking time to share his expertise with the Bureau’s management and audit staff. He noted that the insights shared would go a long way in enhancing the effectiveness of the audit function at UBOS.

Dr. Mukiza further commended Mr. Ndyanabo for his distinguished career spanning more than three decades, describing him as a formidable pillar in the audit profession. He observed that Mr. Ndyanabo’s wealth of experience and dedication continue to inspire excellence and professionalism within the field.

The Audit Awareness Session underscored UBOS’ commitment to promoting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. It also highlighted the vital role internal auditors play in identifying risks, providing solutions, safeguarding information, and supporting better decision-making. The engagement left participants with valuable lessons on how a strong and empowered audit function can contribute to the success and sustainability of any institution.
