Katusiime Jane, the daughter of businessman Banturaki, has lived a life marked by hardship, courage, and survival. Her journey is one of pain, resilience, and the search for safety after years of persecution because of her sexual orientation.
Jane’s struggles began at a young age. At the age of 14, she experienced sexual abuse, an event that left lasting emotional scars. Even before that traumatic experience, she had felt attracted to girls, although she had not yet fully understood her feelings or identity. As she grew older, she realized that she was more emotionally and romantically connected to women than men.
While attending Iganga Secondary School in Eastern Uganda, Jane discovered that some other girls shared similar feelings. The school was a strict Christian faith-based institution where same-sex relationships were strongly condemned. Students suspected of being lesbian could face expulsion, public shame, family rejection, or even forced marriage. Because of these dangers, Jane and her friends had to keep their relationships secret. They would spend time together under trees during breaks, pretending to study, and would find other discreet opportunities to meet away from the eyes of teachers and fellow students.
When Jane later joined university, life became slightly easier. Living in a hostel gave her more privacy, and she was able to continue her relationship with another woman without constant supervision. However, despite the freedom university offered, she still lived in a society where homosexuality was heavily stigmatized and viewed as unacceptable.
After graduating in 2004, family expectations quickly followed. Like many young women in her community, she was expected to find a job, marry a man, and start a family. When her father began pressuring her to get married, Jane decided to tell him about her sexual orientation. The revelation was not accepted. Instead, she was threatened with rejection from her family if she refused to follow traditional expectations.
Under enormous pressure, Jane entered a traditional marriage in 2008, followed by a church wedding in 2009. Although she did not want the marriage, she felt she had no choice. She feared losing her family, damaging her father’s reputation, and bringing shame upon those she loved. Throughout the marriage, she continued to hide her true identity while secretly maintaining a relationship with her longtime partner, Milcah.
For several years, Jane lived a double life. Outwardly, she appeared to be a wife and mother. Privately, she continued her relationship with Milcah, who also maintained relationships with men to avoid suspicion. The secrecy became increasingly difficult as the years passed.
Around 2016, Jane’s husband began suspecting that she was involved in an affair. As she became emotionally withdrawn from the marriage, particularly after the birth of her second child, the relationship deteriorated. According to Jane, her husband became increasingly violent. He frequently assaulted her physically and forced her into sexual acts against her will. Some of the beatings were so severe that she required medical treatment and suffered lasting injuries.
The abuse continued for years. Jane describes living in constant fear as her husband monitored her movements, searched through her phone, and attempted to discover who she was communicating with. To protect herself and Milcah, they limited their communication and met only when it was safe to do so.
In 2020, the violence reached a critical point after another serious assault. Jane reported the abuse to the police. However, she later found herself facing accusations from her husband as well. She believes that corruption and influence affected the outcome of the legal proceedings, leaving her without justice and even more vulnerable than before.
Afterward, Jane’s husband allegedly informed relatives and community members about his suspicions regarding her sexual orientation. Rumors spread rapidly throughout the community. Some people viewed her as immoral, while others believed she was spiritually possessed. Neighbors began avoiding her, and some parents refused to allow their children near her. She became increasingly isolated and feared for her safety.
The situation worsened when her husband and other individuals reportedly sought evidence that could be used against her because of her sexuality. Jane learned that efforts were being made to build a case that could result in her arrest. Friends warned her that she was in danger and advised her to leave before it was too late.
The consequences extended beyond her personal life. Her employer was informed about her sexual orientation, and she lost her job. She was told that she would be a negative influence on the young mothers and girls the organization supported. Losing her employment left her without financial security and made it even harder to rebuild her life.
Fearing arrest, violence, and possible imprisonment, Jane began moving from place to place. She hid in different parts of Uganda, including Nansana, Mukono, Sheema, and Fort Portal. She rarely stayed in one place for long because she feared being identified and attacked. During this period, she relied heavily on the kindness and support of trusted friends.
Life in hiding was extremely difficult. Jane lived with constant anxiety, uncertainty, and fear. She eventually sold some of her belongings to raise money and secretly began preparing travel documents. Throughout the process, she remained cautious, knowing that discovery could place her at even greater risk.
Eventually, Jane was able to leave Uganda before further action could be taken against her. She escaped the environment of fear and persecution that had dominated her life for many years. Today, she is seeking asylum and protection abroad.
Katusiime Jane’s story is not only about suffering but also about survival. It is the story of a woman who endured abuse, forced marriage, discrimination, social rejection, and threats to her freedom because of who she is. Despite these challenges, she found the courage to seek safety and a future where she can live openly and without fear.
Her journey stands as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by many individuals who are persecuted because of their sexual orientation and the importance of providing protection to those whose lives are at risk.
