A 30-year-old man has died after he was allegedly attacked during an argument over a village leadership election in Kasese District, prompting police to launch a murder investigation. The incident happened in Kisanga Village, Maliba Sub-county, and has left residents shocked as authorities continue with investigations.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as Masereka Nelson, a resident of Kisanga Village. The suspect, who is commonly known as Sowedi and comes from the same village, has already been arrested and is expected to face prosecution.
Police say the incident happened on the night of July 25, 2026, at around 9:50 p.m. It is alleged that Nelson and the suspect got into a heated argument over the upcoming election for the village chairperson. What started as a disagreement reportedly turned violent within a short time.
Investigators say the suspect allegedly picked up a stone and struck Nelson on the forehead, causing him to fall to the ground. It is further alleged that the suspect continued beating him until he became unconscious before fleeing from the scene.
A friend later rushed the injured man to a nearby drug shop for first aid and immediately informed his relatives about the attack. Family members responded and arranged for him to receive further medical attention.
On the morning of July 26, Nelson was transferred to Rukoki Hospital for specialised treatment. Despite the efforts by medical workers to save his life, he was pronounced dead later that evening at around 5:00 p.m.
Police launched a search for the suspect soon after the incident. He was eventually tracked down and arrested while hiding in Bunyangabo District. He is expected to be transferred to Hiima Division for prosecution as investigations continue.
Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident and said inquiries are ongoing to establish all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault. Police have urged members of the public to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid using violence, especially during the election period.
