The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has launched another significant wildlife conservation effort by relocating three Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls Conservation National Park to Ajai Wildlife Reserve in West Nile.The move is intended to expand the habitat range of the endangered species, strengthen conservation measures and open up new tourism opportunities in the region.
The translocation represents another important achievement in Uganda’s continued efforts to protect the Nubian giraffe, a species whose largest remaining wild population is found within Uganda’s protected areas.Dr. Patrick Atimnedi, the Assistant Director Veterinary Services, said expanding giraffe populations across different ecosystems is essential in protecting the species from possible future environmental and ecological threats.Leading the relocation exercise, Dr. Atimnedi noted that the process was conducted in line with internationally accepted conservation guidelines. Before the transfer, experts carried out detailed scientific research, habitat evaluations, disease risk assessments and consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure the giraffes’ successful relocation.Ajai Wildlife Reserve was identified as a suitable destination after assessments confirmed that it has the necessary ecological conditions to support giraffe populations. The reserve’s extensive acacia vegetation provides an appropriate feeding habitat, making it ideal for the reintroduction of the species.Conservation experts believe that bringing giraffes back to Ajai will contribute to restoring the reserve’s ecological balance.
The animals are expected to support vegetation management while helping revive the area’s historic wildlife diversity, which has reduced over time.The latest translocation adds to UWA’s previous conservation achievements. In recent years, the authority has successfully relocated Nubian giraffes to various protected areas, including Lake Mburo National Park, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, helping to establish new giraffe populations beyond their traditional habitats.The initiative is part of UWA’s wider giraffe conservation programme implemented with support from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The partnership has enhanced Uganda’s wildlife conservation capacity through specialised training and technical assistance, enabling teams to carry out complex animal relocation exercises.
Apart from protecting the endangered species, officials believe the introduction of giraffes to Ajai Wildlife Reserve will increase the area’s tourism potential, attract more visitors to West Nile and generate economic benefits for neighbouring communities. The project highlights Uganda’s commitment to wildlife conservation while promoting sustainable development through tourism.Previously, UWA introduced kobs, buffaloes, zebras and now giraffes to Ajai Wildlife Reserve as part of efforts to restore and strengthen the reserve’s wildlife population.
