Two men have died after suffocating inside a deep underground well while attempting to repair a water pump in Kakindu Sub-county, Mityana District.

The incident happened on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at around 1:00pm in Bifuma LC1, Kakindu Sub-county, according to police.

The deceased have been identified as a male adult only known as Rasta and Brown Rogers.

Police said the two men were fixing a water pump inside a deep well at the residence of Bamulanzeeki Mohammed when tragedy struck.

According to the preliminary information, Rasta first entered the deep well to work on the water pump. While inside, he reportedly began experiencing difficulty breathing due to inadequate oxygen.

His colleague, Brown Rogers, is said to have followed him into the well in an attempt to assist him. However, he also reportedly became overwhelmed by the lack of oxygen, resulting in both men losing consciousness and dying inside the well.

The incident was reported to Kakindu Police Station by the area village chairman, Ssemango James.

Kakindu Police was later reinforced by officers from Mityana Police and the Wamala Region Fire and Rescue Services team commanded by AIP Sabala Tonny.

Upon reaching the scene, the rescue team assessed the situation before carefully retrieving the two bodies from the deep well.

The bodies were later evacuated to Mityana General Hospital for postmortem examinations as police continued inquiries into the incident.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP L Kigozi appealed to people who bring workers into villages to ensure that they are properly introduced and profiled by local leaders.

Police noted that the identities of the two deceased men were not yet fully established because their employer had reportedly not presented them to the local leadership for profiling.

Police have urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution when working in deep wells and other enclosed spaces where oxygen levels may be dangerously low.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
